What has happened to Croydon? – water photo

Projects are being delivered by a range of

partners from the private, voluntary & community and public sector.

The Quarter 3 Progress Report highlights the progress and activities of those projects .

Key achievements of the projects include;

14 projects are now delivering a range of services to increase enterprise across

Croydon.

6 District Centre Managers are now in post

1 Business Friendly Planner is in post and working with businesses

The Construction Skills Centre in New Addington is being refurbished and will

be open in February 2007

Business advice and support is now available and a one-stop telephone

number for business advice and information will be launched in February 2007

The Croydon Enterprise website has been re-branded

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The purpose of the Croydon Enterprise Programme (formerly known as LEGI) is to

increase entrepreneurial activity; encourage existing business growth and reduce

business failure; attract new business, inward investment and local employment

opportunities across the Borough with a focus on Croydon’s neighbourhood

renewal areas.

The Croydon Enterprise programme is £77m over 10 years. The first 3 years of

funding for 2006-2009 has been approved by Government Office for London

The purpose of the programme is to increase entrepreneurial activity, encourage

existing business growth and reduce business failure, attract new business, inward

investment and local employment opportunities across the Borough with a focus on

Croydon’s neighbourhood renewal areas.

I am a resident of Croydon and i have had firsthand experience of the Croydon Enterprise and must admit i was taken in by the PR machine that took place over the years since the Enterprise started it’s initiative. But since then everyday that i pass through Croydon i am slowly losing confidence of what is unfolding in front of me.

To those that do not live in Croydon, a painting of glossy features and water photo happy people in news features, so pleased to be helped by Croydon Enterprise, just does not cut it to me because in reality when you can stand in the middle of the Whitgift centre and see for yourself the aftermath of lack of funding and support from the 77million that was suppose to transform this city then you can see what i see.

Looking at this with open eyes, since the Croydon Enterprise objective was advertised all over the place, 3 years ago, i could literally take a press water photographer around the centre of Croydon and his film roll would be filled with pictures of not progress, not bustling new business, but with dereliction?

Shop units boarded up, shop units filled with "For Let signs", shopping precincts once bustling with business now a haven for vandalism.

West Croydon ( Broadgreen) indicated by Croydon Council as a ‘hot spot’ of depravation, has not changed, it still looks like a dump and there is no encouragement for developers
